ISTE Ed. Technology Standards for Students

Response to the ISTE’s Educational Technology Standards for Students
WOW! I am a Digital Immigrant in a big way. I am not in my comfort zone at all! I need to spend a great deal of time and in a linear way to feel comfortable with all this paradigm learning but I’m doing it. …And I see the need to think this way…to look at learning in a totally new way…it is urgent that we do it now…. but I am not in a position of authority to make these decisions. With budget restraints, technology is the first to go…the technology education that we have is minimal and controlled by the technicians that keep the computers running and connected to the Internet, not on what it can teach us. Technology needs to come to the forefront in all subjects, especially in literacy. Being able to collaborate and publish with peers and experts can be easily done. It was unbelievable how many experts I was able to communicate with just from my limited experiences of blogging.
The standards are do-able…. for the teachers and the students that have CONSTANT awareness of the new methods and techniques that are available. We need to build on our knowledge. Just having an understanding of blogging has provided many classrooms with an ability to be a part of a global community that interacts in a compassionate and humane way. Just look at the interactions and understanding that resulted from that teacher’s blog that gave a kidney to her friend! She used her experience to teach so many subjects. She provided a great deal of situations for her children to use critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making. How rich of an education she has provided for her students by being an active participant in technology. The connections available from that one blogger were phenomenal. This new age have heightened the value of two categories of human skills. The first is “expert thinking—solving new problems for which there are no routine solutions.” The other is “complex communication—persuading, explaining, and in other ways conveying a particular interpretation of information.” This new age has a great deal of opportunity, but it is as unkind to the slow of foot as it is to the rigid of mind. Digital Immigrants need to JUST DO IT!
